Abstract Given an apparent increase in food allergies worldwide, the focus on prevention strategies has intensified. Mimickers of Urticaria: Urticarial Vasculitis and Autoinflammatory Diseases. Martes 21 de enero

Mimickers of Urticaria: Urticarial Vasculitis and Autoinflammatory Diseases. Authors: Davis MDP1, van der Hilst JCH2. Author information 1Department of Dermatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Electronic address: davis.mark2@mayo.edu. 2Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunity, Jessa Hospital. BIOMED Research Institute, University of Hasselt, Hasselt, Belgium. Abstract A wide differential diagnosis must be considered in a patient presenting with urticarial plaques. Although acute and chronic urticaria are the commonest diagnoses, other differential diagnoses include polymorphous eruption of pregnancy, mast cell disorders, hypereosinophilic syndrome, urticarial vasculitis, pemphigoid, systemic lupus erythematosus, and autoinflammatory disease. This review will specifically address urticarial vasculitis and autoinflammatory syndromes. These entities represent contrasting examples of urticarial-like lesions resulting from either an adaptive immune complex-mediated mechani

Diagnosis and treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis. Miércoles 15 de enero

Diagnosis and treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis Authors: Nirmala P. Gonsalves, MDa, Seema S. Aceves, MD, PhDb Abstract: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an eosinophil-rich, TH2 antigen–mediated disease of increasing pediatric and adult worldwide prevalence. Diagnosis requires greater than or equal to 15 eosinophils per high-power field on light microscopy. Symptoms reflect esophageal dysfunction, and typical endoscopic features include linear furrows, white plaques, and concentric rings. Progressive disease leads to pathologic tissue remodeling, with ensuing esophageal rigidity and loss of luminal diameter caused by strictures. Therapies include proton pump inhibitors, elimination diets, and topical corticosteroids. Effective treatment can reverse tissue fibrosis in some patients, as well as decrease the rate of food impactions. Esophageal dilation might be required to increase luminal patency. The chronic nature of EoE necessitates long-term therapy to avoid disease recu

Sensitive Skin Syndrome: An Update. Martes 14 de enero

Sensitive Skin Syndrome: An Update. Authors: Do LHD1, Azizi N2, Maibach H2. Author information 1Hiep Loi Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. dolehanhdung@gmail.com. 2Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, CA, USA. Abstract Sensitive skin syndrome is a widely reported complaint but a diagnostic challenge because of its subjective symptoms and lack of clearly visible manifestations. Epidemiological studies have shown the prevalence of sensitive skin to be as high as 60-70% among women and 50-60% among men. Patients with this syndrome usually have unpleasant sensations when exposed to physical, thermal, or chemical stimuli that normally cause no provocation on healthy skin. Recent studies and newly accepted position papers have provided a more in-depth understanding and consensus of its underlying pathophysiology, associations, diagnosis, and treatment. Since no clinical studies have been conducted about specific treatment pr
